What more can we say about the Golden Girls?? Four women who share a house on Richmond Street in the sweltering heat of Miami, Florida. Four women who couldn't be more alike, but also couldn't be so different from one another. It all started out when one day, Blanche Deveraux (played by Rue McClanahan), the saucy, sexy, Southern Belle who lovvvveeeeeeessss the company of men, put an add on the bulletin board at the supermarket advertising bedrooms for rent. It was then, when Rose Nylund (played by Betty White), often known as the "Scandinavian nitwit", who is so nieve, and often called the "dumb" one of the group, noticed Blanche's ad on the board, and that began the 7 year era known as "Golden Girl Madness" where knock-offs of things they wore all the way down to Sophia's famous purse began selling, and The Golden Girls became one of the top 5 most watched Saturday night television shows. The Cast: Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, a divorced substitute teacher, who's idea of fun is setting home on a Saturday night reading a book; | Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo, the fiery Sicillian "gecko", the matriarch of the group, who always describes her daughter, Dorothy, as "Pussycat". Sophia was lodged at Shady Pines Retirement Home, where she said, "We had steak at Shady Pines. One of course, they threw it on the table and made us go after it." When the retirement home burned down, Sophia went to Blanche's house, and stayed in the third available bedroom.; | Rue McClanahan as Blanche Deveraux, played the sexy, saucy Blanche Deveraux, also known as the "slut puppy" or the backstabbing slut, and lovessssss the company of men. She once had brought out all of her datebooks, and on each book, in bold capital letters, were the initials "BED", and when Rose had asked Blanche that if she didn't sleep with the men in those books, then why did it say 'BED' on the cover. Blanche had explained that those spelled her initials, Blanche Elizabeth Deveraux, but ironically, in another episode, Mamee Watkins had called out her name as Blanche Marie Hollingsworth. Blanche, the owner of the house, who's niece, Lucy, had came to visit, Lucy had said that "You haven't changed a bit, you're still gorgeous", and Sophia had turned around and told Lucy to "Get some Windex". Blanche often got into tough scrapes with men, and Dorothy and Rose and Sophia had to often rescue her.; | Betty White as Rose Nylund, played the Minnesotian farm girl, who had been raised in a strange town known as "St. Olaf", was often called the Scandinavian Nitwit, and the dumb one of the group. But, Betty White had stated on Lifetime Television's Intimate Portrait that the character of Rose wasn't dumb, she was just so nieve. Truth is, there were some times when Rose didn't seem so nieve, and came up solving alot of problems. Rose once had told the girls she had read a Scientific Journal, and when Blanche had said "I refuse to believe you ever read a scientific journal", Rose turned to walk out the kitchen door and said "Fine, believe what you want, I don't care....Hypersexual Bitch." , just had proved that Rose Nylund was no fool, just sometimes she got too, well, nieve! :)
So to this day, the Golden Girls can still be viewed in the United States, on the Lifetime Network. Only sad part is the fact that they are re-runs, but who knows, maybe someday they'll do a reunion show, or even cooler, a reunion Movie! But one thing remains, only a true Golden Girls fan will always have the "inner golden girl" in their heart!
